PROJECT: Lars Book Club Art Work of Tales from the Back Row by Amy Odell

The House that Lars Built is a creative lifestyle blog founded by Brittany Jepsen. Every month a new book is featured for the Lars Book Club and each month an artist is selected to create artwork to the theme of the book. The August selection was Tales from the Back Row by Amy Odell. At the end of the month, the book’s accompanying artwork is featured and made available as a free downloadable PDF on the blog. The printable is an 8 x 10 inch poster and a book mark. The project required a quick turnaround and I was able to complete it within the two-week deadline. You can access the artwork here.

The only guideline provided was to choose a quote as inspiration for the artwork. I was given creative liberties to interpret the quote. I chose, “There is nothing normal about this business.” Amy Odell has musings on what the fashion industry deems as beautiful. So I created a beauty portrait depicting the odd facial expression and how models contort their heads. The illustration was created on nideggen paper with watercolor, gouache, and Indian ink. The handwritten text was created separately and then composed with the illustration in Photoshop.
