National Ice Cream Day | Ice Cream Printable + Activity
July is National Ice Cream Month and the 21st is National Ice Cream Day. I love ice cream a lot and to celebrate this yummy national holiday we went to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, the best ice cream in the world. If you’ve never had the chance to be in conversation with me about Jeni’s ice cream (I have talked many people’s ears off about this ice cream) now is your chance to be acquainted with this ice cream and how I feel about Jeni Britton Bauer. I first heard about Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream when Jeni was a guest on the Creative Pep Talk podcast. I was sold on this woman and her business simply because she’s a creative genius! The way she talked about the science behind food and how she poured her creativity into creating the most amazing flavors was inspiring. You could hear the passion in her voice as she talked about her journey into making ice cream and from that alone, you knew you could trust her and that she had created a solid product. There’s nothing I love more than art and food and Jeni’s encompasses that from the second you walk into the store. You smell melted sugar from the making of waffle cones and your eyes are greeted with the inviting chalkboard menu that lists the flavors and the sizes in whimsy illustrations. I have now been to three different locations, two in Nashville and St. Louis, and each store carries that warm and welcoming ambiance. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream truly is my favorite place and Jeni has mastered ice cream like no other.
Aside from her splendid ice cream, Jeni is someone I feel connected to as a creative and as a mother. Jeni is a firm believer that children are who they will become. She believes that they should be able to do what they love and that when parents give their children experiences that feed their interest as well as open them up to new experiences, they’ll become people that can do powerful things for our country and the world. When discussing her life and how she came to make ice cream, I prompted to look back at who I was as a child and doing so has motivated me to carry on doing what I love and to bring back the interest I had put aside or had forgotten. Jeni hasn’t only inspired me in my work, but she has also inspired my son. When we first when to Jeni’s in Nashville, Anthem watched in awe at the employee making the waffle cones. He turned to me with a frown and said, “Mom, I want to be a cook!” He felt that immediate drive to do something he was passionate about, at four years old! Since he’s a bit young to be cooking on his own, I created this activity and printable that will hopefully give him his fill until then. He lined up his cones and glued his painted and glittered ice cream scoops on the top of each cone and said, “Look, mom, I’m an ice cream factory.” Just like what he saw at Jeni’s. Happy National Ice Cream day my friends and with that, I want to share with you one last Jeni Britton Bauer advice, “Don’t wait for things to be perfect or for Inspiration to find you. Find it in front of you. Just open your eyes and do something.” Scroll to the bottom for the link to the printable.
