Confident Lines

I started drawing this lady back when I was still in Tennessee. I love how naturally she came to life. It's as if she just flowed right out of my pencil. It is moments like this that I am reassured I'm growing as an artist. Confident mark making makes a confident artist. And man does that confidence show! I'm slowing building trust in my brush and in my hand, and when I trust, beautiful things happen. For instance, check out that hand! I always start off my illustrations with a light pencil sketch and then lay down the ink. Inking my drawings always take a leap of faith because there are many times where I much prefer my pencil sketch to the inked illustration. Seriously though, I have a stack of un-inked fashion illustrations collecting dust because I'm so scared to ruin them. Man, fear can really mess with you! But like I said, I'm learning to trust.

This piece was fun for me to create cause I went with the flow and experimented more. I originally planned on just doing a pattern design on the skirt and laying down some color block with the sea green paper. However, this lady had other things in mind. My printmaking professor's motto is, "Experiment today for a better tomorrow." How right she is! So, here's to experimenting! Be bold, make adventures! Whether it be in your art, office job or stay at home wife/mom job. Take risk because you never know what you'll create!
